Is USDT safe? Tether reserves, audit and freeze risk (2026)
Most people start worrying about USDT when it occurs to them that the USDT in their account might not really be worth that many dollars. As of September 2026, Tether has moved most of its reserves into US Treasuries and completed its first full financial statement audit with KPMG in August 2026; there is no evidence it is in a death spiral like UST in 2022. But that doesn't make USDT a bank deposit. What actually matters is why it holds $1, when it can depeg, and the more realistic traps: address freezes, exchange risk controls and cash-out problems.
